4 of 5 stars

Sorry I am so behind. I finally finished Guernsey, and I enjoyed it. It was very fun to read.

I loved reading The Undaunted. I do agree with Gramma though, I was very surprised to be back in the mines also but I liked the background on the fictional characters. Learning more about our ancesters was the best though. I had pictured Jens Nielson short and cubby but now I have a better idea of what he truly looked like. I also found that he was an amazing man that I would like to learn more about. I was really impressed to learn that he was more crippled than I had realized and that he still went on this trek with determination to see it done. I liked reading the footnotes as much as I did the story.
I have since read The Hole in the Rock by David Miller. I was hoping to learn more about the people who went on the trek and how they felt and how they accomplished it but it dealt more with the day to day doings and not really much about the people. I did find it funny that all of the writings of those who traveled through the hole barely mention it. It was a very good book though.

The Undaunted by Gerald Lund

I was so excited to be reading about the Hole in the Rock pioneers, and then I find myself in the coal mines of England. I wasn't prepared for the chapters and chapters before we got to the "call to the San Juan." Not that I hated it, but I wanted the book to be about the trek. I really enjoyed it when it finally got to the historical part of the novel and enjoyed reading about your ancestors, but even then, I wanted more of the real people and less of the fictional. Notice the glaring typo at the beginning of Chapter 65, page 702. I can't imagine how that one got through the editors.

1 Book 2 Months

Because our lives are so busy I think we should extend the book club to two months per book.

For October - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
November & December - The Undaunted by Gerald Lund
January & February - Moloka' by Alan Brennert

Please post a review when you have completed reading the book. Also, please share any other books that you have read.

Happy October

Friday, October 2, 2009

Well, it's a new month and I still haven't finished the book for September... I started it but had the hardest time getting into it. Kirsten said to just push through it because it got better, but it just isn't gonna happen. So I look forward to the October's book while Avery sleeps :)

Potatoe Pie

I thought this book was very interesting and well written. I did not like the format though. I get bored with the letter format. I feel (not just with this book) that the letters leave too much out. I want dialogue and action. This author did do a great job in describing the characters personalities though. Quite an odd assortment. I enjoyed the little bit of information that was given about the Guersney Island.
I thought that Juliet was a little uppity about some things and wondered how she captured the hearts of the book club so quickly.

4 points

Hi all, I read this book earlier in the summer and loved it. I learn things about the war that I didn't know, and I love to learn new things. While the book had a lot of sadness, the kindness of the people of Guernsey gave the story a sense of hope. I didn't like the girl who went down to write the story, at first, but got to like her better as the book progressed.

Well, I finally finished Peace Like a River. I can't say I am huge fan of the book, but it was an interesting bedtime read. I am not too critical of books, but this one took me awhile to get into and a long time to finish. It didn't capture my attention enough to want to keep reading to see what happened next. The characters, however, were well developed and I agree that Swede did make the book more enjoyable.

I liked Peace Like A River. It was very entertaining, and thought provoking. I loved Swede. She made the book so much better! Especially her poems about Sunny Sundown. Very good book!

Procrastinator

Hey everyone! I just barely purchased the book a couple of days ago. I promise I will have it read soon! I will spend every free moment to finish it! Don't give up on me yet. Hope everyone is doing well.

Lachlans Choice

Hop On Pop

Lachlan carries the book around saying "pop" and wants you to read it if he sees you. I can't tell you how many times a day I read it, not to mention every time Karson has to read it as well!

BOM

I am sorry Karson and I weren't able to read the book this month. I really wanted to , but the library didn't have any copies available! Dang library!

I finished Peace like a River at Lake Powell this past weekend and I didn't want it to end. It has characters that seem very real and I would find myself wondering about their welfare when I wasn't reading. I know I am weird that way but some characters are written so well that I do that. These character were like they were people you could possibly know but never really know. Very interesting. I would give this 4 stars out of 5.

If anyone has a favorite children's book that they want to share, please post it. This book is one Havyn and I both like to read.
When Librarian Molly McGrew drove her bookmobile into the zoo all the animals went wild simply wild about wonderful books. This story is in rhyme and is funny to read aloud and fun to look at.

Welcome Welcome

Welcome to the first month of our book club. Hopefully we will be able to find fun books everyone can discuss and enjoy. Feel free to leave a comment, review or star rating on each book we read.
I chose Peace Like A River by Leif Enger for the first book. I enjoyed the way it was written and being torn between right, wrong and the gray area in between. Enjoy!
